i’d like to challenge the “not sounding scary bit” ;) as “perkele” has a very nice gravelly “rrrr” in it. a softer equivalent is of course the multi-cultural “saatana”. and another good traditional one is “jumalauta” which is literally “god, help” which is very useful when something doesn’t co-operate, like when you are hammering and the nail keeps bending all the time. when you hit yourself on the thumb, use “perkele”

i used to have a postit note next to my desk listing all the things you wanna know, but unfortunately i lost it due to the recent office move :-) so here’re a few top of my head:
hitto(damn), perkele(damn=devil), paska(shit), vittu(equivalent to fock- you often hear ‘voi(ah) vittu’ from teenagers). You see that I had good instructors! Finnish swear words are very cute. They never sound scary or offensive. But remember that Finnish is a very unique language. It has nothing to do with other scandinavian languages.
