crayfish
2004.08.18 - 07:08Not really relevant to today’s happenings, but since i cant fall asleep easily tonight & am too lazy to play w my book or laptop- decided to play w my phone. For those lobster-lovers out there, it might look quite pathetic to even try to crack open the tiny crayfish for the unnoticeable amount of meat inside (my childhood memory from korea tells me that crayfish is something you catch for fun, not as food). However for whatever environmental/dietary reasons, swedish people had to have it (as it seems) and over time managed to come up with a cultural ritual attractive enough to make crayfish eating a seasonal festivity: singing and drinking hard booze inbetween each crayfish eaten. I’m a huge fan of local seasonal food, mostly for their natural excellence in terms of taste and freshness. With crayfish, i see an escalation of food substance transformed into tool, or sacrifice for the cultural ritual. Shown in the pic: sacrifices of different sizes and origins.
